LOGAN, Utah – Utah State head gymnastics coach Kristin White has announced the addition of six future Aggies. The list includes Alexis Boone, Sydney Jelen, Nyla Morabito, Riley Sorrell, Mya White and Isabella Vater.
"Robert (Ladanyi), Rachel (Slocum) and I have hit the ground running on this 2023 recruiting class and we couldn't be more elated to welcome these six remarkable young women to our program," White said. "This class is comprised of elite-level athletes, a DP national champion, a Canadian national champion, multiple national qualifiers, and regional and state champions."
According to College Gym News Ratings, Utah State has the 14th-best recruiting class in the nation.
"Lexi, Sydney, Nyla, Riley, Mya and Isabella are going to become one of the most historic signing classes in our school's history," White said. "I am thrilled to watch their journey as Aggies over the next four years. We have leaders, motivators and determined young ladies joining Utah State, and our fans are going to really enjoy watching them all on the competition floor."
Alexis Boone | Waxhaw, North Carolina | Perfect Balance Training
Boone has trained at Perfect Balance Training in Charlotte, North Carolina, for four years under the direction of Teshawne Jackson. She was a five-time regional qualifier and 2017 regional all-around champion.
The daughter of Brandon and Stacy Boone is set to graduate from Cuthbertson High School in 2023.
"We are excited to have Lexi join our Aggie Family," White said. "Her power and love for Utah State is what stood out during the recruiting process. She is a dedicated student, and we look forward to having her energy and school-spirited attitude in the gym every day. We expect her to contribute on vault, beam and floor."
Sydney Jelen | Carpentersville, Illinois | Legacy Elite
Jelen has trained at Legacy Elite in Aurora, Illinois, under the direction of Anna Li and Jiani Wu. She is a five-time national qualifier and was most recently the national beam champion at the 2022 DP National Championships, as well as the state championships.
Additionally, Jelen, a two-time all-state Region 5 member, was the national bar champion in 2018, as well as earning two top-three finishes in 2021 and 2022. She also tied for first with fellow signee Mya Witte on beam at the 2018 Hopes Classic.
The daughter of Eric and Laura Jelen is set to graduate from Dundee-Crown High School in 2023.
"We are eager to have Sydney and her family join the Aggies," White said. "She is one of the top athletes in the country, while also being the reigning DP national champion on the balance beam. Sydney is going to be a strong all-around competitor for our program, and we are ecstatic for her arrival here in Logan. She will showcase her phenomenal gymnastics abilities for all our fans here in Cache Valley."
Nyla Morabito | Welland, Ontario, Canada | Manjak's Gymnastics
Morabito trains at Manjak's Gymnastics in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, under the direction of Kelly and Sue Manjak. She was the 2022 Canadian national bars champion, and also placed second on floor, second in the all-around and fourth on vault.
Additionally, Morabito is a three-time Canadian Championships qualifier and six-time Team Ontario member for Elite Canada and the Canadian Championships.
"We are thrilled to have one of the top Canadians in the 2023 signing class join our program," White said. "It was clear through the recruiting process that Nyla is hungry to make an immediate impact in NCAA gymnastics. Her athleticism is going to help make her a very strong all-around competitor for our program. We are excited for Nyla to display her powerful gymnastics for our USU gymnastics fans."
The daughter of Chauncey Morabito and Asia Yarema-Morabito is set to graduate from the Notre Dame College School in 2023.
Riley Sorrell | Holly Springs, North Carolina | Sonshine Gymnastics
Sorrell, who has trained at Sonshine Gymnastics since 2010 under the direction of Milan and Heidi Stanovich, participated in the all-around at the 2021 national championships, where her best finish was on bars as she tied for 18th. That same year, she placed sixth in the all-around at regionals and fourth in the all-around at state.
"Riley is one of the most hard-working athletes I have met," White said. "She is motivated to be an all-around competitor for our program and has shown tremendous strides over the past six months. Her gymnastics is very clean and that is going to help make her a great contributor for our team. We are excited to welcome her to Logan next fall."
The daughter of Charles and Regina Sorrell, who also competes on the Middle Creek High School (Apex, North Carolina) gymnastics team, is set to graduate in 2023.
Isabella Vater | Las Vegas, Nevada | Browns Gymnastics
Vater trains at Browns Gymnastics under the direction of Kyle Khou and Jordan Cobbs. She placed fourth in state in the all-around, vault, bars, beam and floor in 2022, and second on both bars and floor at the Valley of the Sun Challenge. In 2021, she placed first on both bars and floor, and tied for first in the all-around.
Additionally, Vater is a two-time Western Nationals qualifier and earned club MVP honors on floor in 2021 and bars in 2022.
"We are pumped to have Vater's spunky personality join our team," White said. "She will be a contributor on all four events and has continued to improve daily. I have no doubt she is going to make an immediate impact on our team not only as an athlete, but as a leader. With having some family and friends nearby, we are excited to have their support for Isabella and our team in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum."
The daughter of Heidi Vater is set to graduate from Faith Lutheran High School in 2023.
Mya Witte | Greenacres, Florida | Genie's Gymnastics
Witte has trained at Genie's Gymnastics in Lake Worth, Florida, for 15 years under the direction of Jana Bieger. The two-time qualifier for the Junior Olympic National Championships competed at the 2022 Women's Development Program National Championships, where she tied for sixth on beam.
Additionally, Witte was the 2022 Florida beam state champion and placed first on beam at the 2019 American Classic. She also captured first place in the all-around and tied on beam at the 2018 Hopes Classic with Jelen, her future teammate.
"Mya has competed at the highest level in our sport, reaching senior elite status," White said. Her competitive experience will help lead this freshman class to historic levels. We are excited to have her join our program as an all-around competitor. She has been one of the best beam performers in the country since she was very young. We are thrilled for Aggie Nation to see Mya live in our arena."
The daughter of Michael and Erica Witte is set to graduate from the Florida Virtual School in 2023.
