CARLSBAD, California – Utah State's golf team is tied for third after two rounds of the second-annual UC San Diego Invitational at La Costa on Monday.
 
Host UCSD is currently the team leader at 17-under 559 after firing a 279 and a 280, leading runner-up Sacramento State (-11) by six strokes.
 
The Aggies shot a 3-over 291 in the first round at the 7,151-yard, par-72 La Costa Champions Course. Utah State, the tournament's defending champion, came back in the second round with a 280, shaving eight strokes off for the team's best round of the season, and is currently sitting at 5-under.
 
Utah State's 8-under 280 in the second round ranks 10th in program history for lowest team 18-hole score.
 
Weber State is also tied for third after carding rounds of 282 and 289, while UC Irvine is in fifth place at 2-under 574.
 
John Cook, playing in just his second collegiate round ever, opened the tournament with a 1-over 73. The sophomore from Agoura Hills, California, was 1-over through the first three holes of the second round before making five birdies and an eagle to finish at 6-under 66, a career best for 18 holes. He is currently tied for third at 5-under 139.
 
Cameron Tucker also finds himself inside the top 10 for the Aggies as the senior is tied for eighth at 3-under 141 (70-71). Sophomore Javier Vazquez is tied for 15th at 2-under 142 (73-69).
 
Freshman Esteban Jaramillo is tied for 47th at 5-over 149 (75-74), while fellow freshman Julio Arronte Sanchez is tied for 80th at 11-over 158 (75-83).
 
UC San Diego's Davis McDowell is in the clubhouse with a one-shot lead at 8-under 136 after carding rounds of 69 and 67.
 
The two-day tournament concludes Tuesday with golfers playing 18 holes.
