LOGAN, Utah – Utah State head men's tennis continued its fall tournament season at the Boise State Invitational on Friday with four Aggies seeing action on day one.
In doubles play, the senior duo of Javier Ruiz and Roko Savin opened play in the round of 16 by defeating Montana's Jake and Josh Watkins, 8-4, to advance to the quarterfinals. Ruiz and Savin defeated Boise State's Simon Arca Costas and Caden Moortgat, 8-5, to move on to the semifinal round of the tournament.
Elsewhere in doubles play, senior Bodin Zarkovic and junior Stijn Paardekooper lost in a tiebreak to Boise State's Jan Lucca Marquardt and Michael Bott, 8-7 (3).
In singles play, Ruiz defeated Jake Watkins, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 32 while the trio of Savin, Zarkovic and Paardekooper received byes into the round of 16. Ruiz's singles run came to an end versus Arca Costas, 6-3, 6-0, while Zarkovic fell to St. Mary's Diego Jarry, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
Both Savin and Paardekooper advanced to the quarterfinal round of singles play as Savin defeated St. Mary's Carlos Ramos, 6-3, 6-2, while Paardekooper won via retirement over Montana's Tom Bittner, 1-6, 7-6 (3), 3-0.
Singles and doubles play is set to continue on Saturday at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho.
