LOGAN, Utah – Utah State's men's cross country team ranks No. 6 in Week 3 of the NCAA DI Cross Country Regional Rankings, which were released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
On the women's side, the Aggies dropped six spots to No. 12 in the Mountain Region.
BYU leapfrogged Northern Arizona into the No. 1 spot in the men's Mountain Region following the Cougars' head-to-head victory over the Lumberjacks last Saturday at the Oklahoma State-hosted Cowboy Jamboree.
Following BYU and NAU, the third through seventh spots remained unchanged. Colorado is third, Air Force is fourth, Montana State is fifth, the Aggies are sixth and Utah Valley is seventh.
Besides the Aggies and Falcons, four other schools from the Mountain West are in the top 15 of the region in Colorado State (eighth), Wyoming (ninth), New Mexico (10th) and Nevada (11th).
There was quite a shakeup from the top spot all the way down to No. 15 on the women's side. Northern Arizona soared 10 spots from No. 11 to No. 1 after placing second at the nationally-loaded Cowboy Jamboree. The Lumberjacks beat former No. 1 Colorado (now fourth), former No. 2 BYU (now third) and former No. 5 Utah Valley (now sixth).
Utah, which previously ranked No. 4, moved to No. 2 following its victory last Friday at the Minnesota-hosted Roy Griak Invitational.
The only team to remain unchanged in the top 15 was Wyoming, which remained at No. 7. Air Force was not ranked a week ago, but now finds itself at No. 8. Colorado State (down two to No. 5) and Nevada (down one to No. 13) were the two other schools from the MW that joined the Cowgirls, Falcons and Aggies in the top 15 of the region.
Regional rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams' strength with current season results (if applicable) in determining a rank-order of squad potential. Only USTFCCCA member programs are eligible to receive a ranking. Teams with provisional status within the region may be ranked.
The Aggies will return to action on Friday, Sept. 30, at the Lehigh-hosted Paul Short Run on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
