FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Utah State women's tennis went undefeated in the first round of doubles play as the Aggies began their run at the Colorado State-hosted Jon Messick Invitational on Friday.
 
Two pairs of Aggies competed in Double Flight A. Graduate Monique Burton and junior Lisa Küng defeated South Dakota senior Paige Alter and sophomore Sonia Skobkareva 6-3 in the first round. Graduate Annaliese County and sophomore Indya Nespor made up the other USU pair in the flight, posting a 6-4 first-round victory over South Dakota senior Estella Jaeger and sophomore Bea Havlickova.
 
Both Utah State duos lost in the quarterfinals, as Burton and Küng lost 6-3 to New Mexico juniors Hsuan Huang and Katherine Jhang. County and Nespor had a tough battle in their match against Denver sophomore Andrea Burguete Beltran and freshman Claudia Martinez de Velasco, falling in a tiebreaker 7-6 (4).
 
Senior Zeynep Naz Ozturk and freshman Jade Brilhante dropped just two games in their 6-2 first round victory over South Dakota senior Sydney Weinberg and sophomore Grace Chadick in Doubles Flight B. The Aggie duo then lost 6-2 to New Mexico sophomores Maria Sodre and Maud Vandeputte.
 
Redshirt senior Sidnee Lavatai and junior Laura Fernanda Eugenio De Hilario had a first-round bye in Doubles Flight B before losing 6-3 to Colorado State graduate Ky Ecton and sophomore Sarah Weekley.
 
All eight Aggies played a round of singles, with two picking up a first-round win. After dropping the first set, Burton came back for the 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 victory over Colorado State junior Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya in Flight A Singles. County then earned the straight-set victory 6-2, 7-5 against South Dakota sophomore Maya Arksey in Flight C.
 
Two more Utah State student-athletes competed in Flight A, with Ozturk losing 6-3, 6-2 to Denver fifth-year senior Taylor Melville and Küng losing 7-5, 7-5 to Colorado State freshman Luana Avelar.
 
Eugenio De Hilario won her first set 6-3 against Weber State freshman Dylan Lolofie before losing the next two 6-4, 10-7 in Flight B. Nespor played in the same draw, losing 6-1, 6-2 to New Mexico's Vandeputte.
 
Brilhante lost to Denver's Martinez de Velasco 6-2, 6-1 in Flight C. After dropping set one 6-1 to South Dakota's Alter, Lavatai took the second to a tiebreaker, ultimately losing 7-6 (7).
 
The Aggies are back in action at the Jon Messick Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 9 a.m.
