Utah State Women’s Tennis Continues Run at the John Messick Invitational

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Utah State women's tennis competed in singles and doubles action on Saturday at the Colorado State-hosted John Messick Invitational. 

In the doubles Gold North Draw, fifth-year Zeynep Naz Ozturk along with senior Lisa Küng won their match 6-3 over South Dakota's Paige Alter and Amanda de Oliveira as Utah State sophomore Magdalena Nunez Pureco and junior Cielo Tapia-Cruz lost their match in the draw 6-3 against South Dakota junior Beata Havlickova and freshman Sorcha Caves.  

Junior Indya Nespor paired with Weber State sophomore Li Yang Ping An defeated Utah State senior Maile Brilhante and freshman Ana Chavez Sanchez in a tight 7-6 tiebreaker win of the Green East Draw Semifinals. 

The Aggies participated in 16 matches of singles play with two players advancing to their respective main draw finals. 

In the Gold East Draw quarterfinals, Ozturk was defeated 6-2, 7-5 by Colorado State junior Sarah Weekly. She then went on to beat South Dakota's Caves in a 2-6, 6-2, 10-4 win in the semifinals of the Gold North Draw, advancing herself to the finals.  

Küng earned her first singles win of the day in the Gold West draw posting a 6-2, 7-6 victory over MSU-D senior Emily Hafner. In the semifinals, Küng defeated Colorado's Emily Puzak, 7-5, 6-3 to advance into the finals of the draw. 

Nunez Pureco also competed in the Gold West Draw but was defeated by Puzak 7-5, 1-6, 10-6 in the quarterfinal. She then went on to beat Hafner 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals of the Gold South Draw. 

Utah State freshman Niyati Kukreti defeated South Dakota's Anna Medyedyeva in a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 third-set tiebreaker of the Green East Draw, and then recorded a 6-2, 7-6 straight-set tiebreaker win over Colorado State sophomore Luana Avelar to advance to the finals. 

Nespor also found success in the Green East Draw defeating Wyoming senior Lucia Malinak 7-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, but then lost to Weber State's Sydney Schnell in the third set of the semifinals. 

In the Green West Draw, Chavez-Sanchez recorded two wins. The first was a 6-1, 6-3 victory over MSU-D sophomore Kim Heddes in the quarterfinals, and then a 6-1, 6-1 semifinal win over Anya Nelson of Colorado.

Tapia-Cruz found success in the Orange East Draw as she recorded a 6-2, 7-5 straight-set quarterfinal win over Wyoming junior Serina Abriola, and continued with a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set semifinal win over South Dakota's Selena Bird to advance to the final of the Orange Draw. 

In the Orange West Draw, Brilhante took both of her matches in straight-set fashion as she beat MSU-D's Courtenay Leonard 6-4, 7-5 in the quarterfinal, and then left Kambra Roles scoreless posting a 6-0, 6-0 semifinal victory. 

Utah State women's tennis continues play at the Jon Messick Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 1 with matches starting at 9 a.m.
