LOGAN, Utah — Utah State soccer is having a historic 2023 campaign, as the Aggies recently wrapped up the regular season and now turn their sights to next week's Mountain West Championship.
This year's Utah State squad posted a 9-2 record in MW play, a program record for conference wins in a season. The previous high mark was seven wins, accomplished in 2008 and 2016. With 27 points in league play, the Aggies finished second in the league standings, their best finish since joining the Mountain West.
The team will now travel to Laramie, Wyoming, to compete at the Mountain West Championship. Earning the program's highest-ever seed in the tournament, the 2-seed Aggies will have a bye in the first round, then face the winner of 3-seed Boise State and 6-seed Nevada on Wednesday, Nov. 1, in the semifinals. This is the team's fourth time advancing to the MW semis.
Utah State's play this season has been highlighted by strong defense and offensive versatility. The Aggies have posted eight shutouts, including six in conference play, and have held 17 of their 20 opponents to a goal or less. USU's 0.8 goals against average is the best in the Mountain West and ranks third all-time in program history.
Offensively, the Aggies have relied on their outstanding depth to create opportunities. A league-best 13 different players have found the back of the net this season, while 12 different Aggies have recorded assists. Eight different USU players have scored game-winners, and when scoring first, the team is 12-1 this year.
Chuck and Gloria Bell Field has once again been one of the top home field advantages in the nation, with the Aggies going 9-2-1 overall and an unblemished 6-0 in conference play while outscoring MW foes 12-2 at home this season. In September, Utah State earned a 1-0 win over then-No. 1 BYU, the highest-ranked win in program history and just the second time a USU team has ever beaten a top-ranked team in any sport.
