LOGAN, Utah — Utah State women's basketball got back in the win column Saturday afternoon, earning a 66-54 victory over Warner Pacific inside of the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
The Aggies moved back to .500 on the season with the win, their third victory in the past four contests. For the fifth-straight outing, it was junior guard
Cheyenne Stubbs leading Utah State's offensive efforts, this time scoring a season-high 23 points, the most by any USU player this season and just two points shy of a career high.
"I don't think we played very well, if I'm being completely honest," said Utah State head coach
Kayla Ard. "I'm happy that we're holding our opponents to lower scoring. Last game, we held UC Riverside to 52 points, tonight we held these guys to 54, but I think that we're better than what we're showing right now so we need to learn how to put 40 minutes together."
After a sluggish offensive start in the first quarter, the Aggies responded to a 9-12 deficit with a 25-5 second quarter to take command of the game behind 69.2 percent (9-of-13) shooting in the frame. Stubbs went for 13 first-half points, making six of her eight shots in the first half, while also dishing out a team-best three assists.
The second half was much more competitive on both ends though the Aggie defense remained strong, holding the Knights to just 37.1 percent (13-of-35) shooting from the floor while forcing 19 total turnovers in the contest. The USU lead ballooned to as many as 23 points midway through the third quarter. While Warner Pacific pushed back with 23 fourth-quarter points, Utah State remained on top to earn its largest margin of victory this season.
Along with her 23 points, Stubbs went for six boards, four assists and a pair of steals. Joining Stubbs in double-figures was junior guard
Skye Miller, who has scored 10-plus points in every game this season. She went for a career-high 17 points while making four triples, and also brought down a team-high seven rebounds.
Junior guard/forward
Samiana Suguturaga had one of her strongest performances in an Aggie uniform, finishing with eight points and two boards, while also propelling the team's defense with four steals and a block. As a team, USU had 10 total steals on the afternoon.
