OREM, Utah — Utah State women's basketball came up short in its final road contest of its 2023-24 non-conference campaign, suffering a 68-38 loss to Utah Valley at the UCCU Center Saturday afternoon.
Early in the contest it was
Macy Smith leading the offensive charge for the Aggies, as the junior guard scored the team's first five points of the afternoon, but UVU took charge early with a 16-10 advantage through 10 minutes. After the Aggies were able to close the Wolverine lead to just five late in the second quarter, the Wolverines used a 7-0 run to close out the half to hit the locker room with a 30-18 advantage.
The UVU run extended into the second half, as the Wolverines scored five-straight to begin the third quarter and stretch their lead as large as 17 points. Utah State pushed back with a run of its own, but the deficit remained at 12 after three quarters, USU trailing 42-30.
After climbing back within single-digits, a fourth quarter plagued with turnovers cost the Aggies, as UVU blew things open with a 68-38 fourth quarter sparked by a 22-2 run. The Wolverines shot 100 percent (6-of-6) in the frame to take control and secure the win.
Junior guard
Cheyenne Stubbs led the Aggies in the scoring column for the eighth-straight contest, finishing with 12 points. Graduate guard
Taylia Stimpson was the next highest-scoring USU player at six points in 15 minutes of action. Junior guard
Ivory Finley was the team's top rebounder and facilitator, finishing with six boards and five assists.
Utah State finished the contest shooting 30.4 percent (14-of-46) from the floor, 25.0 percent (5-of-20) from 3-point range and 71.4 percent (5-of-7) at the charity stripe. Utah Valley shot 44.4 percent (28-of-63) from the field, including 44.0 percent (11-of-25) from deep and 25.0 percent (1-of-4) from the free throw line.
The Wolverines (4-5, 0-2 WAC) were paced by Ally Criddle, who finished the afternoon with team-highs of 13 points and five assists.
