LOGAN, Utah – Utah State women's tennis (1-1) is set to split their home opener weekend with an away game in Pocatello against Idaho State (1-2) on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m. before a quick turnaround to host Utah Tech (0-2) the following day on Sunday, Feb. 5, at 10 a.m. at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club.
Utah State returns four letterwinners from the 2022 dual match season in which Utah State went 6-14 and 1-9 in Mountain West play. The returning class includes graduate Annaliese County, redshirt senior Sidnee Lavatai, senior Zeynep Naz Ozturk and junior Lisa Küng. Incoming Aggies include graduate transfer Monique Burton from Southern Mississippi, junior transfer Laura Fernanda Eugenio De Hilario from Saint Katherine, sophomore transfer Indya Nespor from Cal State Fullerton and freshman Jade Brilhante.
Utah State split a pair of matches last weekend in Lincoln, Nebraska, as it defeated Western Michigan 4-3 and lost to Nebraska 4-0. Against the Broncos, USU scored all four of its points in singles play. Zeynep Naz Ozturk posted a straight-sets win (6-2, 6-4) at the No. 1 spot. Lisa Küng won in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) at the No. 2 spot. Monique Burton won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) at the No. 3 spot. And Laura Fernanda Eugenio De Hilario won in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) at the No. 4 spot. In doubles play, Küng and Annaliese County posted a 6-3 win at the third position. Against the Cornhuskers, the Aggies lost the double point and the second, fifth, and sixth singles positions, which left three matches unfinished.
The Aggies trek to Pocatello before the home opener match to play the Bengals who have posted a 1-2 record on the season. Idaho State is Utah State's most-played opponent in program history, with the two sides meeting for the 67th time on Saturday. Utah State leads the all-time series, 35-31, against Idaho State and has won 27 of the past 30 meetings.
Utah Tech opened its season with a pair of shutout losses to Utah. Utah State is 4-0 all-time against Utah Tech, with all four wins coming by score of 7-0.
