LOGAN, Utah – Utah State track & field junior
Mattie Geddes has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, April 16. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
The native of Twin Falls, Idaho, broke the school record in the outdoor 800 meters with a time of 2:08.52 to finish 47th at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California. Geddes' time breaks the previous record of 2:08.85, set in 2000 by Melissa Jensen. Geddes also placed 25th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:29.69.
It is Geddes' first time in her career being named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week.
Utah State track & field continued its string of stellar performances at a quartet of competitions last weekend. Alongside the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Aggies also competed at the Long Beach State-hosted Pacific Coast Intercollegiate and Beach Invitational, plus the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational in Portland, Oregon.
In addition to Geddes' record-breaking performance at the Bryan Clay Invitational, junior
Brennan Benson moved to fourth all-time in the men's 1,500 meters, recording a time of 3:43.60. Freshman
Megumi Ludlow recorded a time of 35:30.36 in the 10,000 meters, moving to eighth all-time at USU in the event. Junior
Sammi Lee led the Aggies in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing with a time of 10:26.67 and moving to ninth all-time at Utah State.
USU's week began at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Long Beach, California, on Thursday. Sophomore
Valerie Clark captured another javelin title, her third of the season, with a mark of 48.07 meters (157-8). Junior
Djamilliah Paepke-Chile finished in third with a mark of 45.33 meters (148-8).
At the Beach Invitational, freshman
LJ Floyd posted USU's second title of the weekend, winning the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:37.57. Junior
Lydia Robison and sophomore
Alyssa McNutt represented Utah State in their fourth and final competition of the weekend at the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational. McNutt also posted USU's third title of the weekend, winning the hammer with a mark of 49.37 meters (161-11).

GOLF – Sophomore Esteban Jaramillo (Bogotá, Colombia) was the top Utah State placer last week at the UCSB Intercollegiate. Jaramillo tied for ninth at 3-over 147 to help the Aggies place fourth out of 12 teams on the par-72, 7,071-yard Seaside Course. Jaramillo led the team and tied for seventh overall with six birdies.
SOFTBALL – Graduate first baseman Gabriella Jimenez (Sacramento, California) helped Utah State to a 2-2 Mountain West record last week after it split a doubleheader at Colorado State (W, 6-0; L, 3-7) and a two-game home series against Fresno State (L, 9-10; W, 8-2). Jimenez hit .500 (7-of-14) for the week with two doubles and one home run, while adding five RBIs and four runs scored. Jimenez also led the Aggies defensively with a perfect fielding percentage and a team-high 28 putouts to go along with one assist. In game 1 against CSU, Jimenez went 2-for-3 at the plate, including one double, one run scored and an RBI, while recording one putout. In game 2, she had nine putouts. In game 1 against the Bulldogs, Jimenez was 3-for-4 at the plate, including one home run, two runs scored and two RBIs, while logging 14 putouts, one assist and a walk drawn. In game 2 against FSU, she was 2-for-4 at the plate, including one double, one run scored and two RBIs, while adding four putouts.
MEN'S TENNIS – Senior Bodin Zarkovic (Belgrade, Serbia) posted a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles (6-2, 7-5), while his match at the first doubles position was left unfinished in Utah State's 4-2 Mountain West home loss to No. 73 New Mexico last weekend.
WOMEN'S TENNIS – Junior Lisa Küng (Stein am Rhein, Switzerland) posted a combined 2-1 record last week as Utah State defeated No. 63 Colorado State (4-3) and lost to Wyoming (4-1) in a pair of Mountain West neutral court matches held in Boise, Idaho. Against the Rams, Küng posted a three-sets win at No. 2 singles (6-3, 2-6, 6-3) and teamed with graduate Monique Burton for a 6-2 win at the first doubles position. Against the Cowgirls, Küng's singles match at the No. 2 spot was left unfinished (2-6, 6-2, 3-2), while her and Burton lost at the first doubles position 6-3.
