LOGAN, Utah – After eight practices, Utah State football will hold its first spring scrimmage on Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium, which is open to the public, on Saturday, April 8, at 1 p.m.

Third-year head coach Blake Anderson will run his team through roughly a two-hour scrimmage and is looking forward to watching his players compete in a live setting.

"We want to see great energy and tempo on both sides of the ball," said Anderson. "We want to see where they are mentally. Do they know how to line up? Do they know their alignments and assignments? The best part of being able to play fast is knowing where you are supposed to be. This will be the first opportunity they have had to show that.

"We also want to play physical on both sides. They don't get a ton of opportunities to go live and tackle to the ground and Saturday will be one of those. Can we tackle in space? Can we block? Can we play competitive ball? We are going run base stuff and find out what they know after eight practices. If we can get that done and stay healthy, we will feel like it is a good day."

Anderson said they will look to run around 70 plays with both the Nos. 1 and Nos. 2 groups. He is also hoping to get some score zone and red zone work in.

Utah State will practice twice next week, on Tuesday and Thursday, before finishing the spring with four more practices the following week, including its annual Blue vs. White Spring Showcase on Saturday, April 22, at 1 p.m.
