LOGAN, Utah – Utah State head cross country and track & field coach
Artie Gulden announced the Aggies' 2023 cross country schedule, which features two home meets, on Saturday, Sept. 2, and Friday, Oct. 6.
"We are excited about the upcoming season," Gulden said. "This schedule should give both teams a good opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Virginia is hosting it, so we are headed to their meet in September to get familiar with the course. That meet, along with the Wisconsin Invitational, will be huge for us if we can beat some good teams from other regions.
"Then, we will head into the championship part of the season by going to Boise for the Mountain West Championships and Lubbock, Texas, for the NCAA Mountain Regionals."
The Aggies officially open the season at home on Saturday, Sept. 2, when they host the Sagebrush Invitational at the Steve and Dona Reeder Cross Country Course. This is the first of two home meets for USU, which will also host the Steve T. Reeder Memorial Invitational on Friday, Oct. 6.
Following its season- and home-opening meet, Utah State will head to Reno, Nevada, for the 2024 NCAA Regional Championships Preview meet on Monday, Sept. 18. Five days later, the Aggies travel to the Eastern Time Zone for the Virginia Invitational, which will be held at Panorama Farms. Virginia will also play host to the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18.
Following the Virginia Invitational, the Aggies will host the Steve T. Reeder Memorial Invitational before hitting the road for the remainder of the season.
Utah State will travel to Madison, Wisconsin, for the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday, Oct. 13, then head to Salt Lake City for the Utah Open on Thursday, Oct. 19, for the final meet of the regular season.
The Aggies will open the postseason on Friday, Oct. 27, at the Mountain West Championships, which are being hosted by Boise State in Boise, Idaho.
The NCAA Mountain Regional Championships will be held in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday, Nov. 10. The NCAA Championships are slated for Saturday, Nov.18, in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Gulden just completed his sixth season as the Aggies' head cross country coach/distance coach. He is entering his eighth season overall at Utah State.
During the 2022 season, Gulden led the Aggie men to their fourth-ever trip to the NCAA Championships – all coming under his watch – where they beat five ranked team and placed 26th with 618 points.
Two members of the women's cross country team also competed at the NCAA Championships in
Ana Weaver, who is entering her junior season, and recent grad
Mica Rivera, who placed 53rd and 201st, respectively.
Yonas Mogos led the Aggies on the men's side, as the senior-to-be was the 85th runner to cross the finish line.
Prior to the NCAA Championships, Mogos earned all-region honors as he placed 23rd at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships.
Gulden coached Weaver to second-team all-conference honors as she placed 13th at the Mountain West Cross Country Championships, where both the Aggie men and women finished third.
On the men's side, senior
Camren Todd and graduate senior
Darren Harman also earned second-team all-MW accolades as that duo placed ninth and 10th, respectively.
Weaver earned USTFCCCA All-Academic accolades for maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and finishing in the top 25 (or 10 percent) at the NCAA Regional Championships. Both the men's (3.61) and women's (3.82) cross country programs were recognized for notching a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 or higher.
