LOGAN, Utah - Utah State head softball coach Todd Judge announced the signing of Alex Bunton on Wednesday.
"We are extremely excited to add Alex Bunton to our team," Judge said. "Alex was highly recruited and ranked coming out of high school. Alex is known to be a defensive specialist with a great glove and arm. We are also expecting great thing from her offensively. Alex has a very high softball IQ and will be a big addition to this team."
Bunton, a 5-foot-8 infielder, joins the Aggies after spending her freshman season at San Diego State, appearing in 18 games and making 12 starts. The native of San Mateo, California, recorded seven hits and six RBIs. Bunton logged 19 assists and 13 putouts during the campaign for a .914 fielding percentage.
Bunton prepped at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, where she helped the Knights to a runner-up finish in the 2019 CCS Division 2 playoffs. She posted a .379 batting average with two home runs and three doubles in 23 recorded games by MaxPreps. In 17 recorded games in 2021 (according to MaxPreps), Bunton batted .449 (22-for-49) with two home runs, 13 RBIs, 13 runs, five doubles, two triples and four stolen bases, posting a .565 on-base percentage and .755 slugging mark.
Bunton was a four-year starter and ranked as the ninth-best third baseman in the 2022 recruiting class (via Extra Innings) and the No. 68 overall player. She also played basketball and water polo at HHS, captaining both teams. Bunton helped her club team, the West Bay Warriors, capture the 2021 Alliance national championship and the 2019 USA Softball national championship. She hit .727 (8-for-11) in the 2021 Alliance three-game championship series and .512 for the tournament.
