CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina – Utah State's gymnastics team posted a season-opening 193.175 to place fourth at the North Carolina-hosted quad meet on Friday night.
Ball State won the meet with a 194.925, host North Carolina finished second with a 193.725 and Rutgers placed third with a 193.400.
"Unfortunately, tonight we didn't show up to compete, and we let our nerves get the best of us," said second-year head coach Kristin White. "This team is capable of so much more and we need to focus on the things we can control. The ladies will get back to the gym next week and begin dialing in on our foundations of success."
Senior Lexi Aragon's beam routine was the highlight of the Aggies' performance as she recorded a career-high 9.850 and tied for first in the event.
Utah State had 13 different Aggies compete, including freshmen Isabelle Vater and Nyla Morabito, who both made their collegiate debuts.
Utah State opened the meet on bars, recording a 48.150 on the rotation. Sophomore Avery Bibbey led the event with a 9.700 to tie for 12th, while Aragon tied for 17th place with a 9.675. Graduate transfer Juliette Boyer earned a 9.775 and tied for ninth, while senior Brianna Brooks capped the rotation with a 9.800, tying for fifth.
The Aggies had their best rotation of the night on beam with a 48.650. After Aragon's 9.850, Brooks tied for third with a 9.825. Graduate student Alivia Ostendorf and junior Dani Kirstine then recorded a pair of 9.700's, which tied them for 13th.
Utah State took the floor for the third rotation and posted a 47.850. Ostendorf highlighted the event with a 9.800 to tie for fourth. Senior Jenna Eagles followed with a 9.700 as she tied for 13th.
The Aggies finished the meet scoring a 48.525 on vault as Morabito opened her career with a team-high 9.800 to tie for seventh. Brooks and Ostendorf scored 9.750's, which tied them for 13th.
Utah State had one gymnast compete in the all-around as Brooks tied for sixth with a 38.575.
Utah State hits the road for the annual Rio Tinto Best of Utah Meet at the Maverick Center in West Valley City, Utah on Monday, Jan. 15. Along with the Aggies, fourth-ranked Utah, 24th-ranked Southern Utah and BYU will also compete.
