Utah State Golf in Ninth Place Following First Round of Mountain West Championships

CRESWELL, Oregon Junior Julio Arronte shot a 1-under-par 71 to lead Utah State in the opening round of the Mountain West Championships on Friday. As a team, the ninth-seeded Aggies are in ninth place after shooting a 6-over 294.
 
Arronte is tied for 13th following the first 18 holes of play at the 7,210-yard, par-72 Emerald Valley Golf Club as he shot a 1-over 37 on the front nine and a 2-under 34 on the back nine, which included birding three of his final four holes. In all, Arronte had four birdies and three bogeys during his round. Arronte now has 10 rounds under par this season and 14 in his career.
 
San Diego State is in first place at 6-under 282, while Colorado State is just two strokes behind the Aztecs at 4-under 284. Fresno State and Nevada are tied for third at 3-under 285, while New Mexico rounded out the top five at 2-under 286.
 
Senior John Cook and junior Esteban Jaramillo are tied for 33rd for Utah State at 2-over 74, while freshman Ashton McArthur is tied for 40th at 3-over 75 and fellow freshman Enrique Karg is tied for 46th at 5-over 77.
 
Cook had two birdies and three bogeys in his opening round as he shot a 3-over 39 on his first nine holes and 1-under 35 on the back nine. Jaramillo bogeyed five of his first 10 holes before settling in and shooting 3-under over his final eight holes. Overall, Jaramillo shot a 4-over 40 on the front nine and a 2-under 34 on the back nine.
 
McArthur had a pair of bogeys during his first nine holes and then shot a 1-over 37 during his back nine with a birdie and two bogeys. Karg was sitting at 2-over with a pair of bogeys during his first 14 holes, before triple-bogeying the par-4, 390-yard 15th hole. After shooting a 1-over 37 on his front nine he carded a 4-over 40 on his back nine.
 
UNLV's Yuki Moriyama and San Diego State's Shea Lague are tied for first at 5-under 67.
 
Utah State players will be paired with golfers from Wyoming for the second round on Saturday, April 27, with tee times beginning at 9:40 a.m. (MT).
