CRESWELL, Oregon Junior Julio Arronte shot a bogey-free 6-under-par 66 to move up to first place on the leaderboard and Utah State finished with a 12-under 276 during an impressive Saturday showing at the Mountain West Golf Championships at the 7,210-yard, par-72 Emerald Valley Golf Club.

Utah State began the day in ninth place and 12 shots back of first but charged up the leaderboard on Saturday as all five Aggie golfers carded rounds of par or better to get to within four shots of the lead as they head into the final round in fourth place.

In fact, USU's 12-under 276 is its best-ever round at a conference championship. It is also five shots better than any other round at this year's MW Championship.

"It was a great day to watch these guys play and I was so happy for them," said USU head coach Dean Johansen. "This is a hard golf course, and everyone played a solid round. We looked like we reached our full potential today."

Colorado State is in first place at 10-under 566 (284-282), while San Diego State and San José State are just two strokes behind the Rams at 8-under 568. USU is at 6-under 570 (294-276) and has a two-shot lead over both Fresno State and New Mexico as both programs are in fifth place at 4-under 572.

Arronte birdied five of his first eight holes on Saturday and then pared his next nine before birding the 18th to card a 6-under 66, which is the lowest round of the championship so far. Arronte, who began the day tied for 13th, heads into Sunday's final round with a one-shot lead as he sits at 7-under 137 (71-66).

Arronte's 6-under 66 is the best round by an Aggie golfer at a conference championship since Devin Daniels also carded a 6-under 66 during his second round of the 2007 Western Athletic Conference Championships. It is the second time this season that Arronte has shot a 66 and was one stroke shy of his career-low round of 65.

For Arronte, it was his seventh round in the 60s this year and in his career, his 11th round under par this year and his 15th round under par during his career.

Senior John Cook carded a 3-under 69 on Saturday and is tied for 16th at 1-under 143 (74-69). Cook was 2-under through 13 holes with a pair of birdies before double-bogeying the par-4 14th. He then birded the next three holes and parred the 18th for his 3-under 69, which is tied for his lowest round of the season. Overall, Cook now has seven rounds in the 60s in his career and 13 career rounds under par.

Freshman Ashton McArthur also carded a 3-under 69 on Saturday and is currently tied for 20th at even par 144 (75-69). McArthur went out with a 1-under 35 as he had a pair of birdies and a bogey. He then shot a 2-under 34 on the back nine as he birdied two of the final three holes. Overall, it is McArthur's fifth round in the 60s this season and his ninth round under par.

Junior Esteban Jaramillo shot even par on Saturday and is tied for 31st at 2-over 146 (74-72). Jaramillo had one birdie and one bogey during his round as he parred the final 12 holes.

Freshman Enrique Karg also shot even par on Saturday and is tied for 42nd at 5-over 149 (77-72). Karg had two birdies and two bogeys during his round as he went out in 1-under 35 and finished with a 1-over 37.

Utah State players will be paired with golfers from Fresno State for the third and final round on Sunday, April 28, with tee times beginning at 11 a.m. (MT).
