LOGAN, Utah — In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the Mountain West announced its lists of the top 25 men and women track & field athletes in conference history on Tuesday ahead of the MW Outdoor Championships this week.
Utah State track & field alumni Chari Hawkins and Sindri Gudmundsson were named to the lists.
Hawkins, who placed eighth in the women's heptathlon for the United States at the 2023 World Track and Field Championships in Budapest, Hungary, is among the most accomplished former Aggie student-athletes.
During her illustrious Utah State career, Hawkins was a three-time second-team All-American in the heptathlon. Hawkins still holds the USU record in the event with her mark of 5,750 points achieved in 2015, while continuing to hold USU all-time top-10 marks in seven other indoor and outdoor events.
In 2015, Hawkins won the heptathlon at the MW Outdoor Championships with 5,622 points and was honored as the Outstanding Performer of the competition and the Student-Athlete of the Year. That same year, Hawkins represented the United States at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea, competing in the heptathlon and was named the Mountain Region Women's Indoor and Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year
The Rexburg, Idaho, native was named All-MW Outdoor in 2014 and 2015 and garnered MW Athlete of the Week nods twice, once as the field athlete and once as the track athlete. In 2014, Hawkins was awarded the MW Hal Rothman Sportsmanship Award.
Hawkins plans to compete in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for track and field at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, from June 21-30, to qualify for and represent Team USA at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Gudmundsson was a three-time first-team All-American in the men's javelin at USU, winning the event at the MW Championships in 2017, 2018 and 2019. At the end of all three seasons, Gudmundsson competed at the NCAA Championships claiming a sixth-place finish in 2017 and back-to-back bronze medals in 2018 and 2019.
The native of Kopavogur, Iceland, still holds the MW record with a mark of 80.49 meters (264-1) and the USU record with a mark of 80.91 meters (265-5), both set in 2018.
