LOGAN, Utah — In coordination with USU Sustainability, Utah State Athletics has announced several sustainability initiatives in advance of the 2024 football season at Maverik Stadium, focused on reducing waste. The efforts are the beginning of a multi-stage process to improve sustainability at Aggie athletic events.
As part of the new initiative, 20 new recycling bins will be dispersed throughout Maverik Stadium. USU's Recycling Center will place a full-size recycling trailer parked in the tailgate lot prior to games, and USU Sustainability and the Student Sustainability Club will be available for tailgaters pre-grame. Both the bins in the stadium and trailer will allow the recycling of plastic (numbers 1 and 2) and aluminum. The trailer will also accept glass bottles.
"We have enjoyed every minute of our partnership with Utah State athletics and facilities and are eager to see how fans react to the new bins in Maverik Stadium," said USU director of sustainability Caitlin McLennan. "Teaming up to reduce waste during football games with our Aggies is a great way to show the university's commitment to sustainability and ignite a culture of environmental stewardship on campus. We look forward to growing the program next season, and count on our community to make that happen."
USU athletics and sustainability are also partnering with USU Dining Services to reduce waste at the source, partnering with vendors and purchasers to swap to-go items, like food containers and utensils, to compostable products and moving from plastic to aluminum bottles, which are more easily recycled. Post-game clean-up crews will also be diverting waste with clear bags.
In an effort to promote recycling education, "Trash Talker" volunteers will be stationed at most of the new recycling bins, helping fans navigate the new system and providing tips for reducing waste. They'll be wearing yellow "trash talker" vests so fans can seek them out to drop off recyclable items. USU Sustainability interns and staff will also staff a table in the south concourse at the stadium, available to answer questions from fans and share more information on USU's sustainability programs.
