LOGAN, Utah – Utah State's golf team will travel to San Diego, California, to compete in the fifth annual UC San Diego Invitational from Sunday through Tuesday, March 23-25, at storied Torrey Pines Golf Course. This is USU's first tournament of the spring season.
The 20-team field will play 18 holes each day on Torrey Pines' South Course, which is a par 72 at 7,802 yards. Shotgun starts are scheduled for 2 p.m. (MT) on Sunday and Monday, while Tuesday's final round will start at 8 a.m. (MT). Live scoring will be available via
Smart Golf.
The Torrey Pines South Course is the more challenging of the two and hosted the 2008 & 2021 U.S. Open Championships. The South course was originally designed by William Bell, Sr. in 1957, and is home to the Farmers Insurance Open PGA Golf Tournament (along with the North Course). In 2001 and again in 2019, Torrey Pines South Course was renovated and redesigned by Rees Jones. With the most recent renovations, Torrey Pines South is longer and plays more difficult, with the South's teeing areas extending the length of this course to up to 7,800 yards. Golfers must also deal with the distractive view of hang-gliders and paragliders, soaring and hovering at the edge of the cliffs on the south end of the course.
Along with the Aggies and host UC San Diego, the 20-team field includes Air Force, Arkansas State, Bucknell, California Baptist, CSUN, DePaul, George Mason, Gonzaga, Houston Christian, Lehigh, New Mexico State, North Dakota State, Oklahoma Christian, Prairie View A&M, Sacramento State, Seattle, UC Irvine and UC Riverside.
Scheduled to compete for the Aggies are graduate
John Cook (Aguora Hills, California), graduate
Cole Enlow (Frisco, Texas), senior
Julio Arronte (Xalapa,Veracruz, Mexico), senior
Esteban Jaramillo (Bogota, Colombia) and sophomore
Enrique Karg (Guadalajara, Mexico).
At last year's UC San Diego Invitational, Utah State tied for ninth with a 54-hole team score of 20-over 884 (307-284-293). Karg led USU as he tied for 18th at 3-over 219 (75-71-73). Arronte tied for 40th at 6-over 222 (78-73-71). Jaramillo tied for 40th at 6-over 222 (80-69-73). Cook tied for 46th at 7-over 223 (76-71-76).
Utah State competed in five tournaments last fall and posted four top 10 placings, including a pair of second place finishes and one third place finish. Arronte led USU during the fall with a stroke average of 70.36 over 14 rounds. Cook had a stroke average of 71.57 over 14 rounds, followed by Karg (72.14), Jaramillo (73.00) and Enlow (73.93).
