Utah State Gymnastics Wins First-Ever Mountain West Championship

Brooks named Championship MVP

SAN JOSE, California – Utah State won its first-ever Mountain West Gymnastics Championship as the Aggies scored a 196.100 here on Saturday at Provident Credit Union Event Center. Overall, it is USU's seventh conference title in school history and first since winning the 2022 Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championship.
 
During the competition, Utah State won one event title and posted two career highs and two more season best scores.
 
Graduate Brianna Brooks, who was named the Championship MVP, tied for first on bars with a season-high-tying 9.900 and tied for third on beam with a score of 9.850.
 
Utah State began the meet on the floor and scored 49.050, followed by 48.900 on vault, 49.200 on bars and 48.950 on beam. USU's 196.100 is its third highest score of the season and tied for its fourth highest in a conference championship meet in program history.
 
Boise State placed second with a 195.950, San José State finished third with 195.350 and Air Force scored 195.150 to place fourth.
 
For Brooks, she has now claimed 24 event titles in her career with nine on beam and nine on bars, to go along with five in the all-around and one on vault. Her nine beam titles are the fourth most in school history, while her nine bar titles are the seventh most.
 
Brooks has now won 12 event titles this season, which are tied for the sixth most in school history by a senior. Her seven beam titles this year are tied with Tana Davis (1990) for the most in program history and her five bar titles are tied for the eighth most.
 
With sophomore Nyla Morabito out due to injury a first-team All-MW selection on floor and vault, freshman Olivia Orengo competed in the all-around for the first time in her career and scored 39.050 to place third at the championships.

Rotation One – Floor (49.050)
Utah State opened the meet with a floor score of 49.050. Sophomore Isabella Vater and junior Marley Peterson posted back-to-back scores of 9.850 in the final two spots for the Aggies as the duo tied for second on the event. For Peterson, her score is a career high. Graduate Jenna Eagles began the meet with a score of 9.775, followed by 9.750 from fellow graduate Angel Stuart, 9.800 from Orengo and 9.775 from freshman Kaylie Medrano.

Rotation Two – Vault (48.900)
Utah State moved to vault for its second rotation and posted 48.900, tied for its third best score of the season. Freshman Lundyn VanderToolen got the Aggies started with 9.800 and Brooks followed with 9.750. Senior Payton Gatzlaff scored 9.800, Medrano scored 9.800 and Eagles scored 9.750. Orengo closed the event with a career high of 9.725 as it was her first competitive vault of the season.

Rotation Three – Bars (49.200)
Moving to bars for its third rotation, Utah State scored 49.200, tying for its third best score on the apparatus this season. Brooks highlighted this rotation for the Aggies as she tied for first on the event with a season-high-tying 9.900. Orengo scored 9.775 in the leadoff spot, followed by 9.500 from sophomore Sydney Jelen. VanderToolen then scored 9.825, followed by 9.825 from junior Avery Bibbey. Brooks then scored 9.900 and senior Dani Kirstine finished the rotation with 9.875.

Rotation Four – Beam (48.950)
Utah State finished the competition with 48.950 on beam. Jelen started the rotation with 9.850, followed by 9.725 from Eagles and 9.750 from Orengo. Medrano then posted 9.750, followed by 9.850 from Brooks. Vater concluded the event with 9.750. Brooks and Jelen tied for third in the championships with their scores.

Up Next
Utah State will be one of 36 teams competing in the NCAA Regionals, which begins on Wednesday, April 2. It will be USU's first regional appearance as a team since 2022.
