Utah State Gymnastics Loses to BYU at NCAA Regionals

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah State gymnastics lost its NCAA Regional first round matchup with in-state rival BYU here at the Huntsman Center Wednesday afternoon as the Aggies scored 194.475. BYU won the dual meet with a score of 195.950.
 
Utah State, who has overcome injuries to key contributors all year, suffered another setback on Wednesday as freshman Olivia Orengo fell during her vault routine and was unable to compete on floor or beam. USU had to adjust lineups on its last two events and was only able to compete five gymnasts on floor.
 
Utah State began the meet on the bars and scored 48.950, followed by 48.825 on vault, 48.000 on floor and 48.700 on beam. BYU scored 48.950 on vault, 48.950 on bars, 49.075 on beam and 48.975 on floor.

Rotation One – Bars (48.950)
Utah State opened the meet with a bars score of 48.950. Orengo started the competition with 9.775 and fellow freshman Lundyn VanderToolen followed with 9.800. Junior Avery Bibbey scored 9.750, graduate Brianna Brooks posted 9.800, senior Dani Kirstine recorded 9.775 and sophomore Sydney Jelen tied her career high with 9.800 in the anchor spot. Brooks, Jelen, and VanderToolen all tied for third on the event.

Rotation Two – Vault (48.825)
Utah State moved to vault for its second rotation and scored 48.825. VanderToolen started the rotation with 9.775. Graduate Jenne Eagles followed with a season-high-tying 9.750 and Brooks scored 9.700. Senior Payton Gatzlaff then scored 9.800 and Medrano scored 9.800. Orengo concluded the event with 8.975 due to a fall. Gatzlaff and Medrano tied for third on the event for the Aggies.

Rotation Three – Floor (48.00)
Moving to the floor for its third rotation, Utah State scored 48.000 as only five gymnasts competed. Eagles scored 9.675 to start the rotation and graduate Angel Stuart followed with 9.750. Medrano scored 9.750, sophomore Isabella Vater posted 9.025 and junior Marley Peterson finished the rotation with 9.750. Stuart, Medrano and Peterson all tied for fifth.

Rotation Four – Beam (48.700)
Utah State finished the competition with a score of 48.700 on beam. Jelen scored 9.550 in the leadoff and Eagles followed with 9.775. Sophomore Mya Witte then tied her career high with a score of 9.825 in her first competition in a month due to illness. Medrano posted 9.200, Brooks scored 9.800 and Vater finished the competition by tying her career high of 9.750. Witte placed third on the event and Brooks was fourth.

Up Next
Utah State will have four individuals compete in the evening session of tomorrow's second round of NCAA Regionals in graduate Brianna Brooks (bars, beam), junior Avery Bibbey (bars), sophomore Sydney Jelen (beam) and freshman Lundyn VanderToolen (bars). Sophomore Nyla Morabito (vault, floor) also qualified for NCAA Regionals as an individual, but will not compete due to injury.
