Esteban Jaramillo shot a 3-under-par 69 to lead Utah State in the opening round of the Mountain West Championship held here on Friday. As a team, USU is in sixth place after shooting a 2-under 286.
Jaramillo is tied for ninth following the first 18 holes of play at the 7,210-yard, par-72 Emerald Valley Golf Club as he shot 2-under 34 on the front nine and a 1-under 35 on the back nine. In all, Jaramillo had six birdies and three bogeys during his round. Jaramillo now has nine rounds under par this year and 28 in his career to go along with three rounds in the 60s this season and 12 in his career.
San Diego State leads the tournament at 19-under following its opening round 269. New Mexico is in second place at 10-under 278, San José State is in third at 9-under 279, UNLV is in fourth at 8-under 280 and Fresno State rounded out the top five at 5-under 283.
The Aztecs' Tyler Kowack and Fresno State's Joseph Lloyd are tied for first individually at 6-under following their rounds of 66 on Friday.
Utah State graduate
John Cook is tied for 16th at 2-under 70 as he carded his eighth round under par this year and the 22nd of his career. Cook shot even par 36 on the front nine and 2-under 34 on his last nine holes as he had four birdies and two bogeys on the day.
Utah State freshman
Toby Heider is playing in just his second tournament this year and is tied for 28th at even par 72, which is his lowest round of the season. He had four birdies, one bogey and a triple bogey during his round. Senior
Julio Arronte and sophomore
Enrique Karg are tied for 48th the Aggies at 3-over 75. Arronte had three bogeys and 15 pars on the day, while Karg had four birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey.
Utah State players will be paired with golfers from Nevada for the second round tomorrow with tee times beginning at 10:20 a.m. (MT).
