EUGENE, Ore. — Sophomore
Shelby Jensen advanced to the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2025 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on Thursday.
"I thought she put herself in a good position and really raced like a pro," said
Artie Gulden, USU's director of track & field and cross country. "I think one thing that was really good for her is that she had a good line of sight for most all of the barriers and the water jumps, which is really helpful in a steeplechase race."
Jensen secured her first career appearance in the national finals with a time of 9:38.01, which placed fifth in the first semifinal heat and 10th overall. She started the race fast and held strong throughout, never falling below fifth at any point in the race. The Saratoga Springs, Utah, native also broke her own school record in the event by 10.33 seconds and eclipsed the automatic event qualifying standard of 9:41.00 for the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships. Jensen became the first Aggie woman to advance to the finals at an NCAA Outdoor Championships since Cierra Simmons-Mecham made the 3,000-meter steeplechase final in 2018.
"She executed the race like a pro and responded when girls went by her in the latter half of the race," said Gulden. "She responded and was able to follow them and just compete like crazy over the last two laps."
On Saturday, Jensen will represent the Aggies in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase finals, which will take place at 7:24 p.m. (MT). Broadcast coverage of the championships will be on ESPNU.
