LOGAN, Utah – The Mountain West announced its All-Academic teams Wednesday and Utah State had 89 student-athletes recognized from its fall sports of cross country, football, soccer and volleyball.
Of its 89 Academic All-MW selections, Utah State had 37 student-athletes from football, along with 18 from soccer, 15 from women's cross country, 10 from men's cross country, and nine from volleyball.
Women's cross country had the most honorees within its sport in the Mountain West, while men's cross country tied for the second-most, football had the fifth-most and soccer tied for the fifth-most.
Boise State led the MW with 97 All-Academic honorees, followed by New Mexico (96), Fresno State (93), Utah State (89), UNLV (88), Wyoming (79), San José State (77), Colorado State (75), Nevada (64), San Diego State (58), Air Force (47) and Grand Canyon (47). Hawai'i, which is a football-only member, had 25 All-Academic honorees, while Colorado College, a soccer-only member, had 21 honorees.
Nine of Utah State's 89 student-athletes from its fall sports to earn Academic All-MW carried a 4.00 grade point average, including three from women's cross country in freshman Charlotte Felt (accounting), freshman Chelsea Shakespear (dietetics), and freshman Hailey Shakespear (kinesiology). Soccer also had three student-athletes with a 4.00 GPA in sophomore Rachel Reitz (kinesiology), freshman Kunie Hirai (kinesiology), and freshman Samantha Sellers (undeclared). Men's cross country had two student-athletes with a 4.00 GPA in graduate Logan Garnica (psychology) and sophomore Joshua Armstrong (kinesiology). And volleyball had one student-athlete with a 4.00 GPA in sophomore Jagoda Bialek (psychology).
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and competing in 50 percent of their teams completed varsity contests. Some latitude was permitted to accommodate injured student-athletes.
