Ayodele Ojo, Jr. Named America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State track and field sophomore Ayodele Ojo, Jr. has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, March 29. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
 
With their sponsorship of the student-athlete of the week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.
 
Ojo ran the 100 meters in 10.14, 0.01 seconds shy of the Utah State record, this past weekend at the Utah Valley Collegiate Invitational. Ojo, who finished best among collegiate runners and second overall, moved from fourth to second in Aggie history in the event. His altitude-adjusted time of 10.17 ranks best in the Mountain West and sixth in the nation.

Nominees from other sports for USU Student-Athlete of the Week included:
GOLF – Sophomore Chase Goetschel (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) shot a career-low 5-under-par 211 to finish tied for fifth at the Minnesota-hosted Bell Bank "Pay It Forward" Collegiate last week. Goetschel recorded his best collegiate finish after opening the tournament with a 3-under 69, followed by rounds of 1-under 71 and 2-under 70. The tournament marked his second career under-par finish and first top 10 placing. His 54-hole score of 211 and 5-under-par performance are both career bests. Utah State finished 12th in the 17-team tournament at 10-over-par 874 (289-290-295).
 
SOFTBALL – Freshman infielder Jazmin Ramirez (Chandler, Arizona) led Utah State in an 0-3 showing versus No. 23 Grand Canyon (L, 3-15; L, 1-10, L, 0-7) last week in Logan. Ramirez began the week by going 1-for-3 in the first game with a home run, and RBI and a run scored. In the second contest, she went 1-for-3. In the final game, she went 1-for-3. In total, Ramirez hit .333 (3-for-9) on the week with a home run, a run scored and an RBI. She had a .333 on base percentage and a .667 slugging percentage. In the field, Ramirez had four putouts and 10 assists with no errors.
 
MEN'S TENNIS – Sophomore Xavier Calvelo (Las Vegas, Nevada) led the Aggies with a 4-0 week across singles and doubles play during a pair of Mountain West sweeps at New Mexico and at Air Force. Against the Lobos, Calvelo teamed with freshman Jakub Medved to record a 7-6 (3) win at the first position to clinch the doubles point. Calvelo then followed with the clinching point in singles play, earning a 6-3, 6-1 win at the second position to secure the 4-0 sweep. Against the Falcons, Calvelo and Medved again combined for a win at No.1 doubles, this time cruising to a 6-1 victory. At No. 2 singles, Calvelo again won in straight sets, earning a 6-3, 6-3 win to help the Aggies secure their fifth-consecutive sweep, setting a program record.
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS – Sophomore Maria Paula Ramos Garcia (Guatemala City, Guatemala) posted a 3-1 record across singles and doubles play as the Aggies fell to UNLV (4-2) and defeated Nevada (4-2) at home. Against the Rebels, Ramos Garcia played alongside freshman Chahd Tourkhani in doubles play and recorded a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point. She also extended her singles match to a full three sets before falling in a tight battle at the fourth position of singles play. Against the Wolf Pack, Ramos Garcia and Tourkhani again clinched the doubles point, earning another 6-4 win at the third position. Ramos Garcia then breezed through singles play, doubling USU's lead in the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles to help the Aggies on their way to the 4-2 victory.
 
WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD – Sophomore Shay Jones (Plano, Texas) finished first among collegiate runners and second overall in the 200 meters and ran on the winning women's 4x100-meter relay team this past weekend at the Utah Valley Collegiate Invitational. Jones ran her individual 200-meter race in 23.56, moving from eighth to third in USU history, and helped her relay squad to a finishing time of 45.87, which ranks fourth all-time in school history.
