LAS VEGAS - Utah State women's tennis notched a 4-2 win over 11th-seeded San Jose State in the opening round of the Mountain West Tournament on Wednesday at the Darling Tennis Center. The Aggies advance to the quarterfinal round to take on third-seeded UNLV on Thursday, April 23, at 11 a.m. (MT).
Doubles
USU claimed wins at the second and third positions of the doubles lineup to take the early 1-0 lead in the match. At the third spot, sophomore
Maria Paula Ramos Garcia and freshman
Chahd Tourkhani scored a 6-3 win to set the tone before sophomore
Kylee Sperry and freshman
Terezia Mlkva clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win of their own at No. 2 doubles. At the top spot, sophomore
Natalie Paterova and freshman
Sabina Pintea were locked in a 5-5 battle at the time the point was clinched.
Singles
The Spartans, as they did in USU's 4-3 road win in the regular season, fought tough in singles play with a pair of wins at the second and fourth positions to jump in front, 2-1. Junior
Magdalena Nunez Pureco then turned the tide for the Aggies, tying the match at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.
As the remaining three matches each came down to the wire, the doubles partnership of Ramos Garcia and Tourkhani added a pair of singles wins to secure the victory for USU. At court five, Tourkhani rebounded after a second-set defeat to score a three-set win, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Minutes later, Ramos Garcia wrapped up a comeback victory at No. 3 singles, dominating the last two frames for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 win to send the Aggies into the quarterfinals.

Utah State faces third-seeded UNLV in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, April 23, at 11 a.m. (MT), at the Darling Tennis Center. The Rebels, who entered the conference tournament ranked 72
nd in the ITA Rankings, claimed the regular season meeting between the teams, 4-2, in Logan. The Aggies took the doubles point and added a singles win from Tourkhani before pairs of straight-set and three-set victories gave UNLV the road win.
