Women’s Tennis Continues Strong Start to Fall Season at Bedford Cup

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – Utah State women's tennis continued a strong start to its fall tournament schedule this weekend at the Bedford Cup, hosted by Air Force, with every Aggie posting multiple victories on the weekend.

Sophomore Terezia Mlkva led the way with five total victories, including winning her consolation bracket, while sophomore Chahd Tourkhani won third place in her singles draw.

In singles play, Mlkva won her consolation bracket after falling to the draw's third-seeded player in the main draw but then reeling off wins against New Mexico's Yu Yun Tsai (7-6 (5), 6-3), Appalachian State's Naledi Manyube (1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6)) and Wyoming's Silver Bijlsma (6-3, 6-3). Mlkva also played alongside senior Tayla Wilmot in doubles play with the duo notching wins over partnerships from Wyoming and Idaho, 6-2 and 6-4, respectively.

Tourkhani, seeded second in her draw, recorded straight-set wins over Idaho State's Scarlett Matthews and Colorado's Yukiko Ikedo before falling in the semifinals. Tourkhani then rebounded to defeat Air Force's Kate Craver in the third-place match, 406, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11). Playing alongside senior Tia Clemens in doubles, the duo earned a win over Appalachian State's Naledi Manyube and Shamiso Ndoro, 6-4.

Clemens posted three singles wins to go along with her doubles victory. She entered her draw seeded fourth and recorded straight-set wins over New Mexico's Vivica Corley and App State's Allegra Hodson, plus a three-set win over App State's Lily Bazemore.

Sophomore Sabina Pintea and freshman Giulia Musat earned the last doubles win of the weekend, winning 6-4 over Wyoming's Eugenia Ceinos and Antonella Taco Villarreal.

Musat earned a trio of singles wins after entering her draw seeded fourth, earning wins over Idaho State's Daisy Carpenter (6-2, 6-1), App State's Ruby Broadbent (7-5, 6-3) and New Mexico's Ana Veroux by retirement. Pintea also picked up a pair of singles wins, defeating Idaho State's Emmy Richards, 6-1, 6-4, and Colorado State's Sorcha Caves, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).

Wilmot added a pair of wins in singles play to her pair of doubles wins, posting wins over App State's Kate Bumgardner, 6-0, 6-0, and Colorado State's Logan Voeks, 6-4, 6-1.

The Aggies will continue the fall tournament season in two weeks at the ITA Regionals in Provo, Utah, on Oct. 13-17.
