LOGAN, Utah (AP) - Running back Nick Whitworth piled up 201 yards and freshman Isaac Mitchell ran for two touchdowns as Division I-AA Idaho State beat Utah State 27-24 on Saturday.
Mitchell scored on a 23-yard run midway through the fourth quarter after Shane Griggs found Whitworth on an 8-yard screen pass on a fourth-and-7 play.
Utah State (5-6) scored with less than a minute left to cut Idaho State's lead to three, but the Aggies' onside kick failed, allowing the Bengals (6-5) to run out the clock.
Idaho State outgained Utah State 442-260.
Utah State's Derrek Shank had two interceptions, one that he returned for a touchdown.
After Utah State blocked Javier Garcia's 37-yard field-goal attempt on the Bengals' first series of the game, the Aggies opened the scoring on Jose Fuentes' 62-yard TD pass to Aaron Jones.
Jones had TD catches in five straight games.
Shank intercepted a pass in the end zone to thwart a drive early in the second quarter. With 43 seconds left in the half, Griggs threw a 14-yard TD pass to Chris Brinagh to make it 14-7.
Utah State running back Emmett White, who was leading the nation in all-purpose yardage, managed only 56 yards on 17 carries.
