UTAH STATE SOCCER GETS FIRST BIG WEST CONFERENCE WIN

LOGAN, Utah- Utah State's women's soccer team snapped its three game losing streak, shutting out the University of California, Riverside, 3-0. The win marks the Aggies' first Big West Conference win of the season and improves their record to 4-6-1, 1-2 in league action. Heather Arnell scored first for the Aggies nearly 30 minutes into the game. This was the freshman forward's first career goal. Five minutes later, USU defender Kennon Roeber knocked in an unassisted goal for the Aggies, 40 yards back from the net. In the second half, Arnell put yet another goal on the board for USU off of an assist from Megan Edge following a corner kick. UC Riverside never managed to get in the game, as the Highlanders took just four shots. Utah State posted a season-high 24 shots in the match. Both teams played a physical contest, as the UCR recorded 13 fouls, while USU had 11. Head coach Jen Kennedy Croft said that a change in some of the player's positions had a positive effect on the game. "We actually changed our line-up quite a bit. We played Melissa [Baggaley] back and had four in the back instead of three. Megan Edge played in our center-mid today and she really held her own," Croft said. "Against Irvine, there were so many break-aways, so we decided to play a little more defensively. Our forwards were taking people on and doing a great job. They opened up the mid-field for us and that's why Heather [Arnell] was able to score some goals today. I'm very pleased with our defensive effort. We may have to change our line-up. It's very exciting." The Aggies will look to improve its conference record when they face the Cal State Fullerton Titans (7-4) on Sunday, Oct. 14 at noon. "I think what we're looking at now is conference," Croft said. "We're in conference, we're 1-2, so we still feel like we're a contender. I think that's the attitude we need to take into every game."
