UTAH STATE SOCCER DEFEATS PACIFIC
LOGAN, Utah- Utah State's women's soccer team shut out the University of the Pacific 1-0 Friday afternoon at Tower Field. The win improves the Aggies' record to 6-8-1 overall, 3-4 in Big West Conference action. The victory also ties the school record for most shutouts in a year with three and puts Aggie goalkeeper Tracy Brady in the record books at second place for most shutouts in a season. The loss drops Pacific to 9-6-0, 2-4 in league play.
Sophomore Amber Tracy knocked in the only goal of the game off a corner kick and an assist from junior Brigid Turner.
Head coach Jen Kennedy Croft said the game was won because of team cohesiveness and defense.
"If you look at the goal we scored, you'd see it was a total team effort," Croft said. "I thought our defense played stellar. Kennon Roeber shut down Kim Force, who's an incredible player, and Tracy Brady was there every time. We have to give this game to the 'D'."
Roeber, a senior defender, kept Pacific's Force from taking any shots. Force, a Sandy, Utah, native leads the BWC with 21 points and is second in the league with eight goals.
"Kennon played physical with Kim and she got frustrated and kind of got out of her game a little bit," Croft said. "I just had Kennon mark her the whole game."
The game was an evenly-matched contest, as the Aggies posted four corner kicks, six goalie saves and 11 fouls. The Tigers notched five corner kicks, six goalie saves and 11 fouls.
Utah State currently holds a winning record at Tower Field this season (4-3). Croft said the players do, in fact, play better when they are at home.
"For some reason, we play really well at home," Croft said. "I think the players enjoy being in front of the home crowd and they just play."
USU will look to defend its winning home record as it takes on Cal State Northridge Sunday at noon in Logan. The Matadors are second in the Big West standings, but are coming off a 1-0 loss to Idaho, which is ranked last in the BWC.
