Volleyball Loses At No. 23 UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Utah State's women's volleyball, ranked 25th in the country, lost a three-game match at No. 23 UC Santa Barbara by scores of 30-13, 30-28, and 30-22. With the loss, USU falls to 11-7 on the season and 7-3 in the Big West Conference, while UCSB improves to 12-9 overall and 10-2 in league play with the win.

UC Santa Barbara made a statement early in the match, quickly building an 11-3 advantage and coasting to the game one win. Game two was a much tighter contest as neither team had more than a one-point advantage until the Gauchos got up two at 26-24 and maintained that advantage throughout the remainder of the game. Utah State opened a quick 12-6 lead in game three before seeing UCSB score 11 of the games final 13 points to sweep the match.

Senior middle blocker Michelle Matheson paced Utah State with a team-high 12 kills and nine digs, hitting .458 in the match. As a team, USU hit just .103 in the contest as compared to .289 for UC Santa Barbara.

Utah State will return to action this weekend at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum as Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside will face the Aggies on Thursday and Saturday.
