Utah State tennis player Andy Madersbacher was voted USU's athlete of the week by the local media panel, it was announced today.
Madersbacher, a senior from Kramsach, Austria, recorded two singles and two doubles victories as he led Utah State to wins over Nevada-Reno (6-1) and Idaho State (4-3) at the UNLV Invitational this past weekend. Against UNR, Madersbacher defeated Tomas Hamrik in two sets (6-0, 6-2) at the number one spot. Paired with teammate Clayton Thomas, Madersbacher recorded an 8-4 victory over Nevada's Hamrik and Stoloff. Against Idaho State, he defeated Simmo Summer 7-6, 7-5. Madersbacher and Thomas then recorded their second doubles win in as many days defeating ISU's Devidze and Summer 9-8.
The Utah State men's tennis team will next be in action Wed., Feb. 28 when it hosts Weber State at 1:30 p.m. at the Sports Academy and Raquet Club.
OTHER ATHLETE OF THE WEEK NOMINEES:
BASKETBALL: TONY BROWN/ Junior... led Utah State to its lone road win this past week at UC Santa Barbara. Despite being a little under the weather Thursday against the Gauchos, Brown scored a game-high 16 points behind four 3-pointers and 6-of-11 from the field. The former Mountain Crest star also added three steals, two assists and one rebound vs. UCSB. At Long Beach State on Saturday, a 71-56 loss for the Aggies, Brown contributed 13 points, while surpassing the 1,000 point plateau in his career at USU. The shooting guard also tallied one assist and one board against the 49ers.
SOFTBALL: CASEY SMITH/ Freshman... was consistent for the Aggies during their five-games at the San Diego State-hosted Campbell-Cartier this past weekend. Smith hit .385 over the three days going 5-for-13 at the plate. The right fielder also scored two runs, hit one double, and was credited with two put outs in the Aggies five games.
GYMNASTICS: NICOLE KILPATRICK/ Sophomore... captured the all-around title in USU's victory over Missouri on Saturday. Kilpatrick recorded a 39.125 all-around score on the evening. The native of Ringwood, N.J., tied for the floor title (9.875) and balance beam crown (9.775). She also tied for second on the vault with a 9.775.
MEN'S TRACK: ANTHONY STEWART/ Junior... took first place in the 55m dash (6.40) and the 200m (21.64) to lead the men's track team to its 2-0 win against Montana State and Montana Saturday in the MSU-USU-UM Dual Meet. Both of Stewart's times were qualifying marks for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.
WOMEN'S TRACK: DANIELLE KOT/ Senior... won the 200m with a PR and qualifying time of 24.43 at the MSU-USU-UM Dual Meet.
