FULLERTON, Calif. - - Utah State's softball team broke its 11-game losing streak upsetting 7th-ranked Fresno State 4-1 Friday in the second day of the Cal-State Fullerton-hosted Kia Klassic. The Aggies are now 4-14 on the year.
Utah State recorded a season-high 14 hits and was led by sophomore Eva DeJarnette who went 3-for-4 on the day, including a double in the fifth that drove in an Aggie run. Junior Heather Curtis and freshmen Casey Smith and Shannon Acevedo also had productive days at the plate each going 2-for-3.
USU didn't waste any time getting on the board scoring a run in the top of the first when sophomore Stephanie Vasarhely drove in Smith on a shot to right field. The Aggies increased their lead in the second as Acevedo brought in junior Heather Curtis on single out to centerfield.
Utah State scored its final two runs in the fifth on four Aggie hits. DeJarnette doubled to bring in Acevedo and sophomore Amanda Carlson drove in the second run on a single to centerfield.
Fresno State attempted a comeback in the fifth inning but only managed to get one run across.
The Aggies will be back in action tomorrow at the Kia Klassic. USU will play its first game at 10 a.m. Opponents and the time of the second game will be determined at the conclusion of pool play tonight.
