FULLERTON, Calif. - Utah State's softball team dropped games to Washington (1-0) and Louisiana-Lafayette (4-2) in its final day of play at the Kia Klassic Saturday. The Aggies fell to 4-16 on the season after going 1-4 during the weekends tournament.
It was a pitchers dual against Washington as the Aggies Kristin Hommel recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts but came out with a loss in the first game of the day. The Huskies scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first. UW's Kim DePaul scored the game-winning run off a single by Amanda Oleson after DePaul got on base on a walk, stole second, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Against Louisiana-Lafayette the Aggies dug themselves into a hole in the first inning allowing the Ragin' Cajuns to score three runs. Jana Mower blasted a 2 RBI single into center field and later scored when Aggie pitcher Xochitl Rameriez walked her in with the bases loaded.
Sophomore Eva DeJarnette brought the game to within one in the second inning hitting her first career homerun with the lead-off batter Stephanie Vasarhely already on base. DeJarnette is the third Aggie to hit a homerun this year. Unfortunately, Utah State's two runs would not be enough as ULL scored an additional run in the second on a one-run homer by Alana Addison. Utah State was held scoreless in the last five innings and lost by a final score of 4-2.
The Aggies will have three days off before meeting in-state rival BYU Wed., Mar. 21 for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
