Utah State's softball team opened Big West Conference play by dropping two close games to Cal State Northridge today by final scores of 3-0 and 2-1. The Aggies are now 4-20 on the season and 0-2 in league play, while Northridge improved to 17-13 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Game one of the double-header was a defensive battle as the Aggies could manage only one hit, while the Matadors recorded just three hits, two of which came in the first inning when all three of their runs were scored.

In game two, USU took the lead in the top of the second inning on a leadoff double by Stephanie Vasarhely, who then scored on a RBI single by Eva DeJarnette. Cal State Northridge tied the game at one in the bottom of the inning and the score remained at one until the bottom of the eighth when the Matadors scored the winning run. Utah State had six hits in the game to Northridge's 14.

Utah State will return to action on Wednesday Mar. 28 when they travel to Salt Lake City to play the University of Utah in a double-header. The Aggies will then return to Big West play next weekend at LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field against Long Beach State on Saturday, Mar. 31, and Sunday April 1. Game times for both days are 1 p.m.
