ST. GEORGE, Utah - Utah State's softball team suffered a 4-0 loss to in-state rival Utah as the Utes' Kristin Arbogast threw a one-hitter against the Aggies to hand Utah State is ninth straight loss this season on Sunday.
The Aggies, who started the season 3-3, entered the Utah-hosted Red Deseret Classic with a 3-7 record. However, USU went 0-5 in the tournament falling to Missouri (8-7), Oklahoma State (2-0), UC Santa Barbara (3-1) and Nebraska (4-0) before Sunday's loss to Utah.
Stephanie Vasarhely recorded USU's lone hit in the contest as she led off the fourth inning with a single with the Aggies trailing 1-0. However, Casey Smith fouled out to the first baseman and Breanne Nickle and Eva DeJarnette each struck out looking to eliminate any Aggie threat.
Utah took control of the game with its first hitter in the bottom of the fourth inning as Niki Hayhurst homered to make the score 2-0. The Utes added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to improve to 8-9 on the season. Utah State fell to 3-12 overall.
The Aggies will return to action on Saturday, March 10 with a doubleheader at Southern Utah. USU will then head to Fullerton, Calif. to play in the Kia Klassic March 15-18.
