LOGAN, Utah - Despite a close hitting contest the Utah State softball team fell to Long Beach State 6-1 Sunday at the LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field. The Aggies 0-3 performance against LBSU on the weekend drops them to 5-23 on the year and 1-5 in the Big West conference.
"People play differently when they are ahead then when they are behind and we just don't know what it's like to be ahead right now," said head coach Pam McCreesh. "We had runners on second and third several times with no outs and we didn't score and that's what we need to do. We need to do a better job."
Utah State's one run came in the fourth inning when sophomore 3B Stephanie Vasarhely doubled to centerfield, advanced to third on a single by the junior C Breanne Nickle, and then scored on a single to rightfield by freshman OF Shannon Acevedo.
The Aggies lead wouldn't last long as Long Beach State scored four runs in the fifth inning and then added to its lead in the next two innings scoring one run in each appearance at the plate.
Utah State did have productive days from freshman OF Casey Smith and sophomore 2B Danielle Rodriquez. Smith went an impressive 3-of-4 at the plate while Rodriquez was 2-for-3 on the day.
USU will be back in action Wed., April 4 when they play in-state rival Utah at 3 p.m. at Ute Field.
