LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's softball team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Sacramento State in its final game of the weekend Saturday. The loss drops the Aggies to 6-31 on the season and 2-10 in Big West Conference action.
It was a battle between the Aggies pitcher Xochitl Ramirez and CSUS's Jillian Bivert that was halted in the top of the fourth when the Hornets scored the only run of the game off a single by Veronica Rodrigues. Rodrigues' single drove in Lori Meixner who had reached on a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Yolanda Estrada.
Utah State had an oppurtunity to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh when Kara Tarbet hit a single to center and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Marnie Andrews. Heather Curtis then hit a single deep into the rightfield and Tarbet was waved into home but was put out at the plate.
"I figured I had to take a chance in the last inning," said USU head coach Pam McCreesh. "I felt like we were leaving people on base when we had opportunities and they (Sacramento State) had to stop it (Curtis' single) and make a good throw, and then the catcher had to stop it and make the perfect tag and it obviously didn't pay off."
Utah State will return to action Wednesday, April 18 when it closes out its seven-game homestand with a double-header against in-state rival Brigham Young at 2 p.m.
