SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - USU's softball team split a double-header with Big West opponent Cal Poly Saturday at Bob Janssen Field. The Aggies dropped the first game 4-2 but rebounded back and shutout the Mustangs 5-0 in the second game of the day. The Aggies are now 7-34 overall and 3-11 in conference action while Cal Poly moved to 20-26 on the year and 4-10 in the Big West.

Utah State saw a two-run lead vanish at the hands of Cal Poly in the first game of the afternoon. Danielle Rodriquez scored the Aggies first run by stealing home after getting on base on a walk, stealing second, and advancing to third on a single by Shannon Acevedo. Acevedo scored USU's second run after stealing second, advancing to third on a sacrifice fly by Breanne Nickle and then crossing the plate on a single by Stephanie Vasarhely.

Utah State's lead lasted for two innings but was quickly put to rest in the third when Cal Poly scored four runs on two hits to take the lead and the eventual win.

Xochitl Ramirez picked up her second win of the season pitching a six-hit shutout in USU's second game. Ramirez recorded five strikeouts and had no walks in her complete game performance. Offensively for the Aggies Heather Curtis and Kara Tarbet lead the team recording two hits each.

In the fifth inning USU scored on an error by the Cal Poly catcher that allowed Curtis to cross the plate and get the Aggies on the board. Utah State scored its final four runs in the sixth inning on three hits and two timely Cal Poly errors. The Mustangs were held scoreless the remainder of the game and Utah State stopped a four-game losing streak with the victory.

USU and Cal Poly will conclude its three-game series with single game tomorrow at 2 p.m.
