LOGAN, Utah -

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's women's soccer team lost to the University of Washington 4-1 on Sat., Sept. 1. The loss brings the Aggie's season record to 0-2.

Washington took 21 shots in the game, a combined effort of eleven different Huskies, while USU was held to just two. Aggie goalkeeper Tracy Brady notched three saves in the first half. Megan Mills came in for Brady at the start of the second half and posted four saves.

"They [Washington] have so many guns," said head coach Jen Kennedy Croft. "Tracy played well, I think she did all she could on all the goals."

The nationally ranked (No. 9) Huskies dominated the first half, knocking in all four of their goals within the first forty minutes of the game. Sophomore Jaime Carstensen put Washington on the board first, scoring two consecutive goals. Fifty-two seconds later, Carstensen assisted senior Caroline Putz in posting the Huskies' third goal. USU's lone goal also came in the first half, thanks to freshman Claire Schend. Husky Gina Brewer finished off the half with a goal assisted by Kelley Schweighart.

"I feel good about our efforts overall," Croft said. "We scored a goal against a power-house, and a keeper that's a national team keeper, so we feel good that they didn't shut us out. We had a 0-0 [second] half, so we're pleased with that. They [Washington] were obviously fatigued in the second half. They looked as tired as we did, and we played a game the day before."

Croft noted that the team needs to increase its endurance in order to play at a more competative level. "We need everyone to be fit enough to play 90 minutes because we just don't have a lot of depth this year," she said. "We still have a long way to go to be as competative as we'd like to be in the Big West, but we're playing well as a team."

Croft said she feels comfortable with starting the season 0-2 as long as the team learns some lessons from the defeat and comes back stronger.

The Aggies will have an opportunity to improve their record when they face the University of Nevada on Fri., Sept. 7 for their first road game of the season. Nevada finished the 2000 season with an overall record of 4-13-0, and was 0-7-0 in Western Athletic Conference action.
