POCATELLO, Idaho -
Utah State's men's tennis team opened the season with a 5-2 road victory over Idaho State Wednesday afternoon. USU won four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches to snag its first victory of the season and its first victory at Idaho State in 11 years.
USU won four singles matches, which gave them the victory over the Bengals. In the No. 1 match, Andreas Madersbacher defeated Vasili Debieze 6-2, 6-4. Jonah Nelson claimed a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Adam Krupp in the No. 3 match. Jason Trask posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mike Chester in the No. 5 match. And Steve Peterson defeated Chris Sadek in three sets 6-1, 5-7, 11-9 in the No. 6 match.
In doubles play, USU scored its two wins when Madersbacher and Thomas defeated Devidze and Stoica 8-6, and Butler and Nelson defeated Stravidis and Sadek 8-3.
"It was a great opening win for us, especially considering we have never won in their facilities before," Coach Chris Wright said. "It was a great effort by the whole team. Even the matches we lost were hard fought, close matches. We'll get better! Overall, I am very pleased. We had great effort and intensity tonight."
The next match for the Aggies is a 10 a.m. meeting with Air Force on Friday, Jan. 18 at the Sports Academy in Logan.
