Jason Trask and Jonah Nelson led the Aggies, winning in the first round of the BYU Invitational. The Invitational features players from BYU, Utah, Boise State, Weber State and Idaho State. On the first day of the tournament Aggie players were a combined 5-9 against the field.
Trask, a junior, opened play by losing his first set 6-7 (8), only to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-4, against Rob Sperry of BYU. In Trask's second match of the night he fell to the third seed of the tournament Eric Nyman of BYU, 6-2, 6-4. Nelson, a senior also fell behind in his first set 4-6, again to come back against University of Utah's Nick Coutts, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3). In Nelson's second match of the night he lost to Mahmoud Resk of Boise State, 7-6 (0), 6-0. Trask and Nelson will both see action on Friday in the men's consolation bracket.
Other Aggies getting victories in the consolation bracket were Brandon Butler, Jordan Butler and Andy Marsh. Brandon Butler defeated fellow Aggie Jacob Jensen, 6-2, 6-3. Jordan Butler also faced a fellow Aggie in teammate Ryan Bair, outlasting him in three sets, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-6. Andy Marsh advanced by defeating Jeremy Price of BYU, 6-2, 7-6 (7).
The Aggies continue their play at BYU Friday with the opening of doubles play. Aggies featured in doubles play will be the tandems of Jonah Nelson and Jordan Butler, Jason Trask and Ryan Bair, and Brandon Butler teamed with Andy Marsh.
Up next for the Aggies is the Rolex Invitational Oct. 23-27, in Las Vegas, Nev.
