PROVO, Utah - Andy Marsh led Utah State men's tennis in the final day of the Brigham Young Invitational. Marsh was the lone Aggie in contention in singles play, vying for the title of the back draw. The Invitational featured players from BYU, Idaho State, Weber State, Boise State, Utah, and a few unattached players. For the tournament USU was 7-13 in singles play, 1-6 in doubles.
Marsh, a freshman, opened play on Saturday against Jason Herrud, an unattached player, in the semifinals of the back draw. Marsh struggled slightly in the first set, pulling it together to win in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (3). In the second set of the match Marsh was hitting on all cylinders and won the set, and subsequently the match, 6-0. In the finals Marsh fell to Beck Roghaar of Boise State, 6-2, 6-2.
"Marsh really played well this weekend," head coach Christian Wright said. "There were just a few points here and there that swayed the momentum to his opponent."
Marsh was also a part of the doubles tandem that advanced to the doubles back draw final on Saturday. Marsh, teamed with Brandon Butler, fell to the team of Battistone/Heapy of Brigham Young, 8-2.
"The tandem of Marsh and B. Butler is one to watch," said Wright. "They had a great tournament."
Up next for the Aggies is the Rolex Invitational Oct. 23-27, in Las Vegas, Nev.
