Volleyball Loses To Pacific In Three Games

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's women's volleyball team had its four-match winning streak stopped tonight by Pacific at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in three games by scores of 27-30, 23-30, 22-30. With the loss, the Aggies falls to 14-14 on the season and 7-9 in the Big West Conference, while the Tigers improve to 16-10 overall and 11-5 in league play.

Utah State outplayed Pacific in game one as the Aggies had 20 kills and hit .267, while the Tigers had just 12 kills and hit .219. However, USU had seven service errors in the game and allowed UOP to rally from a six-point deficit to notch the three-point win. Pacific carried that momentum from game on into the final two games to record the sweep.

Individually for Utah State, junior Erin Cartwright (Hyrum, Utah) led USU with 15 kills, while freshman Zuzana Cernianska (Prague, Czech Republic) had 13 kills and seven digs. Fellow freshman Ingrid Roth (Barrington, Ill.) added 10 kills and a team-high five blocks.

Jennifer Joines paced Pacific as she hit .633 in the match with 19 kills on 30 attacks.

As a team, Utah State hit .191 in the match, while Pacific hit .291. The Tigers recorded 11 team blocks as compared to six for the Aggies. Overall, USU had 11 service errors in the match to just two for UOP.

Utah State will conclude the 2002 season next weekend as they travel to Long Beach State on Fri., Nov. 22 and UC Irvine on Sat., Nov. 23.
