Volleyball Team Closes Season With Loss At UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - Utah State's volleyball team closed out its 2002 season with a 3-0 loss at UC Irvine late Saturday night. The Aggies finished the year with a record of 14-16 overall and a 7-11 mark in Big West Conference play. UCI improved to 17-11, 10-8.

USU lost 30-22, 30-20 and 30-22 in a match which took just one hour and 28 minutes. Erin Cartwright recorded a team-high 12 kills, while Tereza Cernianska and Rickie Rigby added nine kills apiece for the Aggies. Ingrid Roth added eight kills on just 12 attacks for a game-high 66.7 hitting percentage

As a team USU hit just .218,, while the Anteaters hit .461 with Kelly Wing hitting .556 with 16 kills, Chanda McLeod hitting .632 with 13 kills and Dana Kurzbard hitting .550 with 13 kills.

Defensively USU recorded just one block by Zuzana Cernianska, while Taubi Neves had a game-high 10 digs.

On Friday USU lost a 3-0 match to 10th-ranked Long Beach State and finished the year 0-5 vs. ranked opponents. The Aggies had posted three straight winning seasons, including back-to-back 20-win years before this season.
