SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Utah State softball picked up its first win of the season at the Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State today, defeating Northwestern in eight innings, 11-10. USU (1-6) dropped the second game of the day, losing to Loyola Marymount, 9-1 in six innings.
The Aggies posted a season-high nine hits against Northwestern. Pitcher Lindsay Janssen posted her first collegiate win, allowing nine earned runs on 14 hits. She struck out eight. Kara Foster was 2-3 in the game for USU, with two runs scored, a double, a walk, a sacrifice, a run scored, three RBI and a stolen base. Breanne Smith was 2-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Against Loyola Marymount, Utah State was held to just three hits. Casey Smith was 1-2 and scored USU's lone run. Stephanie Vaserhely (1-3) and Marnie Andrews accounted for the Aggies' other hits. Senior pitcher Kristin Hommel allowed five runs, four earned, in 3.2 innings of work. In 1.1 innings of relief, Janssen allowed four runs on four hits.
The Aggies face No. 3 Stanford and No. 11 Michigan on Saturday.
