CEDAR CITY, Utah - Utah State softball fell to 1-10 on the year, losing both games of a doubleheader to Southern Utah (8-9) in Cedar City Thursday afternoon. The Thunderbirds won the first game, 1-0 in nine innings, and took the second game 10-4.
The wins marked SUU's fifth and sixth victories over Utah State in the teams' series that dates to 1977. All-time, the series stands at 53-6 in USU's favor.
Southern Utah held the Aggies to just three hits in the first game, and scored its winning run on a sacrifice fly with two out in the bottom of the ninth. USU freshman pitcher Lindsay Janssen (1-5) worked 8.2 innings, and allowed just one run on six hits. She struck out five and walked two. Catcher Breanne (Nickle) Smith was 1-1 in the game with two walks. Shortstop Heather Curtis was 1-4 with a double, while Casey Smith went 1-2 with a sacrifice and a stolen base.
In the second game of the twinbill, B. Smith hit her first home run of the season, driving in two. She was 1-2 with two runs scored and a walk. Curtis was 2-2 in the second game with a sacrifice. The Aggies' Kristin Hommel (0-4) took the loss, allowing two runs in 1.2 innings pitched. Pitcher Xochitl Ramirez worked 4.1 innings in relief, allowing six earned runs on nine hits. She struck out three. Marcie Neff, a transfer from Ricks College, was 2-4 in the game, with a double and a triple. Neff also drove in one.
The Aggies travel to St. George for the Red Desert Classic hosted by Utah March 1-3. They face Oregon at noon on March 1, followed by a rematch with Southern Utah at 2 p.m.
