BOZEMAN, Mont. -
BOZEMAN, Mont. - In the second day of play at the Montana State Tournament, Utah State's men's and women's tennis teams defeated the Montana Grizzlies 6-1 and 7-0, respectively. The women's victory marks the second shutout of the season, as they defeated Portland State two weeks ago. The wins improve the men's record to 2-3 and the women's record to 4-2.
The men earned the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches as Andreas Madersbacher and Clayton Thomas won as well as Jonah Nelson and Jordan Butler. Thomas, Nelson, Butler, Jason Trask and Steve Peterson each won their singles matches for an additional five points.
"The men's meet was great," head coach Christian Wright said. "Everyone played really hard and with a lot of effort."
The women swept the Grizzlies, winning all three doubles matches and the six singles matches. Doubles partners Sarah Lowe and Caroline Pollock, Haley Hawkins and Carolyn Larsen, and Richelle Ferguson and Jocee Bergeson won the doubles point. Lowe, Bergeson, Pollack, Ferguson, Larsen and Hawkins each won their singles matches as well.
"I am thrilled about the win. The girls were very focused and went out and fought hard," Wright said. "It was fun to see everyone get a win. I am trying to get the girls to understand that winning can become a habit if they keep feeling this confident."
The men face Idaho on Sunday at 9 a.m. The women return home to prepare to meet California Polytechnic State University in California on Saturday, Feb. 23.
