Softball Falls To Sacramento State Saturday

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Utah State softball (2-19) dropped its first game of bracket play in the 2002 Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif. to host Sacramento State (11-15) Saturday, 4-1. The Aggies are now 1-4 in three days at the tournament.

Senior pitcher Kristin Hommel worked 2.0 innings, allowing one run on no hits, two walks and throwing three wild pitches. The Aggies tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on Marnie Andrews' RBI single. Freshman Lindsay Janssen (1-10) came in the game in relief in the top of the third inning, and allowed three runs on 10 hits, including a home run. Janssen struck out three. Five Aggies posted hits on the afternoon, and senior Heather Curtis was 1-3 with a sacrifice.

For the third time this season, USU did not post an error in the game. Sacramento State pitcher Nicole Deatherage (5-2) picked up the win, working a complete game, and allowing one run on five hits. She struck out five.

USU had a bye in the first round of consolation play, and faces the winner of Saturday night's game between San Jose State and St. Mary's (Calif.) Sunday at 10 a.m. MST. The winner of Sunday morning's game advances to the consolation championship game at noon.
